City Overview
Burbank is less than a thirty-minute drive from Los Angeles. One of the major cities in the western part of the US, Burbank is referred to as "the world's media capital," and is home to numerous broadcasting companies and film studios.
In 1867, Dr. David Burbank, who owned a large amount of real estate in LA, bought a sizeable pocket of land and started to breed sheep there. The land was later sold to the Warner Brothers film studio. Railroads were eventually built, and people moved there, forming a village that would develop into a city. On May 1, 1887, the city was finally named "Burbank" after Dr. Burbank.
It was the establishment of a Lockheed Aircraft Company factory in the rural area of Burbank in the 1930s that enabled it to grow into a major western US city.
Major film studios such as Warner Brothers, Columbia Pictures and Walt Disney established their operations, followed by NBC and other broadcasting companies in the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1961, Burbank came to establish a sisterhood relationship with Incheon, inspired by a Korean student who wrote a letter to Burbank saying that he wanted to study English in the city and learn about the United States. Burbank donated books to Incheon and went on to form a sisterhood relationship with the city.
